Re-adapting and Returning to Normal: Back to the Workplace After Lockdown

As life returns to normal after the Coronavirus, what will it be like to go back to a conventional workspace after months of working from home?

COVID-19 has, as we know, seen swathes of the working population setting up their office space at their own kitchen table. This has its positives: flexibility for employees and a well-needed break for the environment, to name just two.

When it comes to the actual teams and teamwork, COVID-19 has also had a huge and multifaceted effect. While effective communication is undoubtedly more difficult online, teams of co-workers have been making use of Zoom not just for their stand-ups, but also for evening ‘pub visits’. Teams are, in spite of distance, united by a common experience, and not just by the company they work for.

As months have gone by and restrictions ease, the main question is: what can be done to smooth the transition back to a ‘normal’ workplace, and to keep hold of strong teamwork as circumstances change? Will the modern workplace ever be quite the same?

The way we see it, there are two key things to think about:

It has to be a team approach

Everyone’s safety and comfort in the workplace will only ever be a top priority. It’s crucial that every team member, from top to bottom, is able to express concerns, both big and small, and to have their voices heard unconditionally. Everyone has vastly different experiences of the 2020 pandemic, and vastly different circumstances outside the workplace.

Welcoming the insights and the innovations:

Lockdown has given everyone a chance to reflect on how they work best, and working from home during the pandemic might have led to ideas about how things could be done differently in the office. Whether it’s increasing flexibility or a re-think of some stagnant office regulations, employees in every sector have really come to understand what works for them in the past few months.
